As Oahu photographers, we have been doing photography in Oahu with families for years. One thing is always definite, kids will be kids. Usually, over five years old, there is no worries. For the younger group, its going to have to be all about fun. First, we try to use the Oahu photography session location to help. Let them play, let them run, let them climb. Candid photos are some of the best from the session. Next, if the kids see us having fun, they loosen up.
We laugh, act silly, usually have a number of strange stuffed characters in our bag to get their attention and make them laugh. Also having them say some of their favorite things while we shoot. "Say pizza, say cupcakes, say Spiderman" just to name a few. If its something they are into, its going to get their attention and get them involved. Sometimes travel, lack of sleep, hunger setting in is hard to overcome. We try everything we can, but sometimes mom and dad might need to step in and do a little bribe, make face behind us, maybe even dance and act goofy behind us. Trust us, there is a huge list of options we can do and we will try everything to make sure you have a great session.
We have pretended to be dinosaurs, Spiderman and danced with stuffed animals all to get a look and a smile. And they are your kids, so sometimes the best person to help get their attention is the parents. We will let you as parents join in on the fun to help. And sure, if they are tired, by the end of the shoot it may get harder and harder. We have usually taken may shots by then so when the kids are done maybe its time for mom and dad to get some memorable pics. There is always fun sand to play in for the kids while we do big people shots and we can get the playing as well.
All in all, don't stress about your Oahu photography session. Always remember, it suppose to be a fun experience for everyone. Just try if you can to make sure the kids are rested and fed and we will handle the rest. They might not always look right at us, might not always smile but your going to be happy with your photos.
